Frequently Asked Questions
What kinds of things are supported by the Maintenance and Operations Levy?
The M&O Levy pays for things that are not funded by state and federal dollars, such as: music and fine arts programs, gifted programs, K12 class size reduction, full-time kindergarten and preschool, school counselors, library/media specialists, custodial and maintenance staff, school office staff, special education teachers and support personnel, textbooks and instructional materials, extracurricular activities such as sports and after-school activities, administration support, transportation, and nutrition services programs
What happens to all these programs without levy funding?
The unfortunate reality is that the school would be forced to make VERY difficult cuts to programs that we know are valuable to students.
If property values go up, does the Cheney School District receive additional money?
Simply put, NO the district does not. The amount of levy money collected by the district remains the same regardless of what happens to proerty values.
We just voted on a bond last year. Why is the district running a levy so soon after?
It is important to remember that bonds and levies are fundamentally different.
Bonds are used to pay for construction and renovation of schools, such as our two beautiful new middle schools currently under construction. Levies help pay for the day to day operations of the school. That money is not used to build or renovate schools.
How often does Cheney Public Schools run levys?
Cheney Schools strategically runs Maintenance and Operations Levies every three years to help keep tax rates predictable for constituents.
